Control4 is retiring OS 2. On 1 November 2026, remote access and every cloud service for systems still running OS 2 will be switched off, and 4Sight subscriptions on OS 2 systems have already been expiring since 31 October 2025. Your system will not stop working: everything you control from keypads, remotes and touchscreens inside the house carries on as normal. But the app when you’re away from home, notifications, voice control and remote support will all go. If your system still runs OS 2, this is the year to deal with it, and in most cases that’s more straightforward than owners fear.

This guide was published in July 2026. The dates are Control4’s own published schedule, and we’ll update this page if they change.

What’s happening, and why

OS 2 dates back to 2010. It has had a remarkable run, but it was designed before most of what we now expect from a connected home existed, and Control4 has said plainly that the OS 2 architecture can no longer meet modern standards for security, cloud services and integration. Control4’s engineering effort moved to OS 3 in 2019 and, more recently, to X4, its newest platform. Keeping a sixteen-year-old operating system connected to current cloud infrastructure eventually stops being sensible, so Control4 is drawing a line under it. (If you’re curious about what a smart home operating system actually does, we’ve a separate guide on that.)

The key dates

  • 31 October 2025: OS 2 4Sight subscriptions began expiring, with auto-renewal switched off. The OS 2 app was also delisted from Google Play: existing installs keep working on Android 13 and older, but newer Android phones can no longer install it.
  • 1 November 2026: remote access and all cloud services for OS 2 systems are retired.
  • Apple devices: the OS 2 app is expected to remain in the App Store a little longer (until around iOS 27), but a new iPhone or a major iOS update can strand it at any point. If you delete the app or change your phone, you may not get it back.

What stops working on 1 November 2026

  • Using the Control4 app away from home (remote access)
  • Push notifications and email alerts
  • Intercom Anywhere calling
  • Amazon Alexa and Google Home voice control
  • Weather data and other cloud-driven features
  • Remote support and software updates from your dealer

What keeps working

Everything local. Keypads, handheld remotes, in-home touchscreens, lighting scenes, schedules and automation all carry on exactly as they do today. An OS 2 house won’t go dark on 1 November — it becomes an island: nothing in, nothing out, and no way for a dealer to diagnose or fix problems remotely. For a system you rely on, that’s not a comfortable long-term place to be.

Your options depend on one thing: the controller

The upgrade route (and the cost) comes down to which controller your system is built around. It’s usually a small black box in the AV rack or cupboard, with the model on a sticker.

EA-series or CA-1 controllers: a software upgrade

If your system runs on an EA-1, EA-3, EA-5 or CA-1 controller, it can run OS 3 today. The update is a staged sequence a dealer performs (via OS 2.10.6, then 3.1.3, 3.3.1 and 3.4.3, in Control4’s published order), and no new controller is required. That restores the current app, remote access, notifications and voice control, and gets you a noticeably nicer interface than the one you’ve been living with.

HC-series controllers: a new controller is required

If your system is built on HC-series hardware (HC-200, HC-250, HC-300, HC-500, HC-800 or HC-1000), those controllers cannot run OS 3, so there is no software-only route. The system needs a current CORE-series controller (or an EA-series one, where available) at its heart. The better news is that a surprising amount of what surrounds the controller can often carry over: lighting dimmers and keypads, audio equipment, much of the cabling and infrastructure. We confirm exactly what stays and what goes before quoting anything.

X4: Control4’s newest platform

Launched in 2025, X4 is the successor platform, running on CORE controllers with a Connect subscription. For some systems the right move is OS 3; for others it’s worth stepping straight to X4. It depends on the age of the rest of your equipment and what you want the system to do. We’ll tell you straight which makes sense for yours, because upgrading twice is in nobody’s interest.

Not sure what you’re running? Send us a photo of the controller in your rack (the model is on the label) or just call with whatever you can see — we’ll tell you in one conversation whether you’re looking at a software update or new hardware, and Control4 has been running hardware upgrade promotions that can take some of the sting out of a controller swap.

We can do this even if we didn’t install your system

A lot of OS 2 systems belong to owners whose original installer has moved on, retired or lost interest. That’s routine for us: Control4 system takeovers are a speciality, not a sideline. We become your dealer of record through Control4’s customer portal, assess the system (often remotely), and give you an honest, itemised estimate for the upgrade: what’s worth keeping, what needs replacing and what it will cost. You’ve already paid for this system once; our job is to bring it up to date, not sell you a new one.

Frequently asked questions

When does Control4 OS 2 support actually end?

Remote access and all cloud services for OS 2 systems are retired on 1 November 2026. The wind-down began earlier: 4Sight subscriptions on OS 2 started expiring on 31 October 2025 and no longer auto-renew, and the OS 2 app has already left Google Play.

Will my Control4 system stop working on 1 November 2026?

No. Local control carries on as normal: keypads, remotes, in-home touchscreens, lighting scenes, schedules and automation. What stops is everything that relies on Control4’s cloud: the app away from home, notifications, voice control, Intercom Anywhere and remote dealer support.

Can my controller be upgraded to OS 3 with just software?

If it’s an EA-1, EA-3, EA-5 or CA-1, yes — OS 3 is a staged software update performed by a dealer, with no new controller needed. HC-series controllers (HC-200 through HC-1000) cannot run OS 3, so those systems need a current controller fitted first.

Do I have to replace my whole system?

Rarely. Even where a new controller is needed, lighting dimmers, keypads, audio equipment and cabling can often carry over. We assess what’s reusable before quoting, and the estimate is itemised so you can see exactly where the money goes.

What is X4, and should I go straight to it?

X4 is Control4’s newest platform, launched in 2025, running on CORE-series controllers with a Connect subscription. Whether OS 3 or X4 is the right destination depends on your existing equipment and what you want from the system. We’ll recommend one, with reasons, after seeing what you have.

My original installer has disappeared. Can you still upgrade my system?

Yes. We take over Control4 systems installed by other dealers regularly, including OS 2 systems that haven’t been touched in years. We become your dealer of record via Control4’s portal, and much of the assessment can be done remotely from our Shrewsbury base.

What does an OS 2 upgrade cost?

It depends entirely on whether yours is a software-only update or needs new hardware, and on the size of the system, so we don’t publish a one-size figure. Every upgrade starts with a free health check and an itemised estimate before any work begins, and current Control4 upgrade promotions are applied where they help.

If your app still says OS 2, don’t leave it until October. Start with a free Control4 health check: send a couple of photos and we’ll tell you which upgrade path your controller allows. Or or read more about our Control4 support and takeover work and aftercare plans. And if you’re weighing up a bigger refresh while you’re at it, our Control4 buyer’s guide and cost guide are honest places to start.
