Smart Lighting Design & Installation in Shropshire

SMC Custom Installs designs and installs smart lighting systems across Shropshire, Cheshire and the West Midlands, from single-room dimming to whole-house lighting control. We work with Control4 and Lutron (including HomeWorks and RA3), and you can try both on working displays in our Shrewsbury showroom.

The Honest Bit

Smart Lighting Is Hard to Sell on Paper

Nobody gets smart lighting on paper, because almost nobody has lived with it. Written down, it sounds like expensive dimmers. Then you spend a week with it: one button takes the kitchen from cooking to dinner, lights fade gently at bedtime, and you never come home to a dark hallway. And when the light itself is properly designed (layered and warm, in the right places, rather than a ceiling full of spots), it changes how every room in the house feels. There’s more on that further down this page; the shortcut is our showroom, where thirty seconds with a keypad explains it better than any brochure.

Lighting That Works the Way You Live

The way you light your home makes a real difference to how it looks and how you feel in it. A smart lighting system replaces banks of switches with a handful of keypads, dims every circuit smoothly, and puts whole-room lighting scenes on a single button: bright for cooking, low and warm for dinner, off throughout the house as you leave.

We design, install, program and support these systems ourselves, using Control4 and Lutron, two platforms we are trained and certified on, not just familiar with. For Lutron lighting and automated blinds in detail, see our dedicated Lutron lighting and blinds page.

Why It Matters

Lighting Design Matters

Lighting is one of the most influential parts of a home's interior and exterior design, and one of the most overlooked. The same room can feel bright and practical at breakfast, calm in the evening and ready for a film at night. The difference is dimming, colour temperature and which circuits are on.

Smart lighting lets you set all of that up once, as scenes, then recall each one from a keypad, remote, app or voice. No hunting along a row of switches; one press and the room changes mood.

  • Whole-room scenes on one button: cooking, dining, film night, relaxing
  • Smooth, silent dimming on every circuit, not just lamps
  • Motion-activated low-level lighting for bathrooms and landings at night
  • An "all off" button by the front door and beside the bed
  • Lighting that works with your curtains, blinds and natural daylight
  • Designed room by room around how you actually use the house
What We Design & Install

Smart Lighting, Room by Room or Whole House

Lighting Scenes

Different lighting for different occasions: a kitchen set for cooking, a dining room set for dinner, a lounge set for a film, each recalled from a single button, the app or a schedule.

Lutron Keypads

Engraved keypads that replace cluttered banks of switches, including Lutron's flush metal and glass Palladiom range. See the full line-up on our Lutron lighting and blinds page.

Retrofit Systems

Systems such as Lutron RA3 and Control4 wireless dimmers replace your existing switches and communicate wirelessly, which means whole-home lighting control in an existing house, usually without rewiring.

New Build Wiring

Building or renovating? We design centralised lighting wiring from first fix, so circuits run back to dimming panels and every wall plate can be a clean, programmable keypad.

Outdoor Lighting

Garden, terrace and façade lighting that follows sunrise and sunset automatically, comes on before you arrive home and joins your indoor scenes for entertaining and security.

Energy & Scheduling

Lights that switch off in empty rooms, dim in response to daylight and shut down house-wide with one touch. It's convenience that also cuts wasted energy. A mock-occupancy mode lights the house naturally while you're away.

The Design Stage

Lighting Design Is a Job in Its Own Right

Here’s the truth about most new-build lighting: nobody designs it. The electrician does what electricians sensibly do without a brief (a grid of downlights in every ceiling), and the result is bright, flat light that treats a snug the same as a utility room. That’s no criticism of electricians; lighting design simply isn’t their trade. What to light, what to leave in shadow, where light should come from and how warm it should be — that’s a discipline of its own.

It’s why, on design-led projects, we bring in independent lighting designer Jenny McCleave of Jenny Smart Lighting, who has more than twenty years in the field and is a regular collaborator on our projects. Jenny decides how the light should behave; we engineer the circuits, keypads and scenes that deliver it. If you’re weighing up whether design matters for your project, our guide on why lighting design matters is an honest place to start.

Common Questions

Smart Lighting, Answered Plainly

Can smart lighting be added without rewiring?

In most homes, yes. Wireless systems such as Lutron RA3 and Control4's wireless dimmers replace your existing light switches and communicate over radio, so the cabling in your walls stays as it is. For new builds and major renovations, a wired, centralised system is worth designing in from first fix. We do both.

What's the difference between smart bulbs and a lighting control system?

Smart bulbs control individual lamps and stop working the moment someone flicks the wall switch. A lighting control system works at the circuit level: proper dimmers and keypads replace the switches themselves, so every light in the room responds reliably, scenes cover whole rooms rather than single fittings, and the system keeps working for guests who've never seen the app.

Does smart lighting work with my existing Control4 system?

Yes. Control4 lighting is native to the platform, and Lutron integrates with Control4 directly. We program them as one system, so your existing remotes, keypads, touchscreens and app all control the new lighting alongside your audio, video and security.
