Smart Home Installation in Shropshire
SMC Custom Installs designs and installs Control4 smart home systems, Lutron lighting, home cinema, networking and CCTV across the whole of Shropshire. We are based in Shrewsbury, in the middle of the county, where our Control4 Certified Showroom lets you see and use everything working before you commit to any of it.

Get in TouchOne Showroom, the Whole County
Shropshire is a big county with no motorway through the middle of it, and plenty of trades quietly draw their boundary at the nearest A-road. We do not. Our showroom, workshop and engineers are at Battlefield in Shrewsbury, which puts the market towns and most of the villages within about forty-five minutes of our door, and Ludlow and the far south within the hour. That radius matters for boring, practical reasons: we survey in person before we quote, we never rush a finish to beat the clock home, and when something needs adjusting after handover, we come back. Telford has its own dedicated page, and you can see every area we cover here.
Why Shropshire Homes Take Thought
Shropshire’s housing stock is one of the most varied in England: timber-framed Tudor houses in Shrewsbury and the market towns, Georgian townhouses, stone farmhouses and cottages, thousands of listed buildings, and modern estates growing around the edges of the towns. Most of it was built long before anyone imagined a network cable, and a good deal of it is protected so that walls cannot simply be chased and made good.
That is not a reason to go without; it is a reason to design properly. Wireless smart lighting control replaces existing switches and talks over radio, so a listed cottage keeps its wiring and its plaster while gaining proper dimming and scenes. Lutron systems in particular suit period homes because the keypads are discreet and the retrofit is gentle. Thick stone walls that swallow WiFi are a routing problem we solve with design rather than a stack of boosters, and where cable genuinely can be got in, we route it sympathetically and invisibly. The building always comes first.
Barn Conversions, Farmhouses and Rural Plots
A large share of our Shropshire work happens down a lane. Barn conversions bring big open volumes that reward properly designed audio and make spectacular cinema and media rooms; the acoustics and sight lines just need planning rather than luck. Rural plots bring outbuildings, annexes and garden offices that want the same network as the main house, which we handle with buried fibre or point-to-point wireless links, and long private driveways where CCTV and gate control earn their keep.
Rural connectivity is the honest caveat, and we design around it rather than ignore it. A robust internal network comes first, because lighting, audio, heating control and automation run inside your house and keep working whatever the broadband is doing. Where full fibre has not reached you yet, we can build the internet feed around 4G or satellite so streaming and remote access still behave.
What Shropshire Households Ask Us For
The most common project is a whole-house Control4 system fitted during a renovation or extension, bringing lighting, heating, audio, blinds and security onto one app and one set of keypads. Close behind are cinema rooms in barns, garages and lofts; Lutron lighting in period townhouses; networks that reach the garden office and the stables; and CCTV on properties that sit well back from the road. And every month we take on Control4 systems installed by somebody else whose installer has moved on, starting with a free health check so you know where you stand.
If you are building new, the cheapest smart home decision you will ever make is getting the cabling designed before first fix. Our guide on when to involve an installer covers the timings, and our page for builders, electricians and designers explains how we work alongside your team.
Not Every Job in Shropshire Needs Us
For a single camera, an aerial or one clever thermostat, a good local electrician is the sensible call and will cost you less. Where we earn our keep is the work that needs design, programming and aftercare from one team: whole-house systems, cinema rooms, first-fix wiring on new builds, and lighting in buildings that deserve care. If your job is not one of those, we will tell you so, and our Shrewsbury showroom is still worth a visit before you buy anything from anyone.
Smart Homes in Shropshire, Answered Plainly
Do you really cover the whole of Shropshire?
Yes. From Shrewsbury we work across the entire county: Oswestry and Whitchurch in the north, Ludlow and Cleobury Mortimer in the south, Bridgnorth and Shifnal in the east, Bishop’s Castle towards the Welsh border. Based in Shrewsbury, working across Shropshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands and the Welsh borders, so the county boundary is not the edge of the map either.
Do you charge for travel within Shropshire?
No. The county is our normal working area, so a project in Ludlow is quoted the same way as one in Shrewsbury. We survey in person before quoting, and travel is not itemised separately for anywhere in Shropshire.
Our house is listed. Can this be done without ruining it?
Usually, yes. Wireless lighting control replaces the switches you already have without chasing a single wall, keypads sit where switches sat, and networking is designed around the building rather than forced through it. Some external hardware, such as cameras on a listed facade, can need listed building consent, and we flag that early rather than after the fact.
Our broadband is poor. Is any of this worth doing?
Yes, because most of a smart home runs inside your house, not over the internet. Lighting, heating control, audio and automation keep working whatever your connection is doing. We build a robust internal network first, and where full fibre has not arrived we can design the internet feed around 4G or satellite.
Somebody else installed our Control4 system. Will you look after it?
Yes. Taking over systems from installers who have moved on or stopped trading is a regular part of our work across the county, and we offer a free remote health check first so you know where you stand before committing to anything.
