SMC Custom Installs designs, installs and supports smart home and cinema systems from Shrewsbury, and has done since 2006. We are six people, all in-house: the team that designs your system is the team that fits it, programmes it and answers the phone afterwards. We are a Control4 Certified Showroom, an Arcam Centre of Cinematic Excellence and a Monitor Audio Platinum dealer.

Established in Shrewsbury Since 2006
We started in Shrewsbury in 2006 and have grown carefully rather than quickly. The result is hundreds of cinema rooms and smart homes across Shropshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands, many of them still looked after by the people who installed them.
We share our building with our sister company SMC Hi-Fi, a specialist two-channel hi-fi showroom with demonstrations by appointment and an in-house repair workshop: same owners, same address, same phone number. It’s where our obsession with how things sound comes from.
Every project has a dedicated project manager from the first conversation to handover, and design, installation and programming all happen under one roof. Nothing gets lost between a drawing and a finished room, and the person who answers the phone in year five knows exactly what is in your rack.
We are long-standing CEDIA members and keep our training current, because an accreditation is only worth having if the work on site matches it. Most of what we do is custom installation, but the showroom is open to anyone: walk in, have a look around, and buy from the range we keep in stock if that is all you need. Six People. A Real Office. Someone Always Answers.
A lot of smart home installation around here is one person and a van. SMC is a six-strong, full-time team: two directors who are in the business every day, a full-time in-house programmer, dedicated in-house support, and two on-site installation engineers, all working from a proper office with proper phone lines, behind our Control4 Certified Showroom in Shrewsbury. It means the person who designed your system is still here to look after it years later, there’s cover when someone’s on holiday, and the phone gets answered while the engineers are up ladders. It’s also why builders, electricians and interior designers build us into their projects.
Meet the Team
Six people, all full-time, all in-house. Between them they design, install, programme and support every system we sell, and you deal with the same faces from the first meeting to the last phone call.
Duncan Lewis
DirectorCo-director. Duncan has more than 25 years in the industry and a degree in design, and he leads on cinema room design from concept to completion. He handles consultations and system design alongside Philip, and does the audio and video calibration on site, where a patient ear makes the difference between a system that measures well and one that sounds right.
Philip Brown
DirectorCo-director. Philip has been with the company for 15 years and is usually the first person a new client speaks to. With a background in computer science and a project management qualification, he runs consultations, system design and project management for many of our jobs, and as a qualified Control4 programmer he still does plenty of the programming himself.
Ian Curtis
Installation EngineerInstallation engineer. One of our longest-standing team members, Ian turns Duncan and Philip’s designs into finished rooms. He has more than 30 years in the industry, a reputation for tidy, careful work, and a habit of staying late rather than leaving a job half-finished.
Ben Curtis
Control4 ProgrammerControl4 programmer. Ben joined in 2016 and now programmes most of our Control4 smart home and cinema systems, helping with installation when a job needs extra hands. He came to us without an industry background and learned the trade here, through on-the-job experience and formal Control4 training.
Brent Riley-Beckett
Installation EngineerInstallation engineer. Brent joined in 2023 after more than 15 years as a fully qualified electrician, which is exactly the background smart home installation benefits from. He spent his first year with us gaining industry accreditations, and his electrical knowledge makes him the natural link with the electricians we work alongside on site.
Mike Griffiths
Technical & OperationsTechnical and operations. Mike joined in 2025 from a 15-year career in IT, bringing new systems and processes with him. He is a certified Control4 Technician and works across support, remote diagnostics and the technology that runs the business itself.

We are proud of our newly refurbished smart home and cinema demonstration showroom, complete with private on-site parking. Designed to guide clients through every aspect of their project, it reflects the standards our accreditations demand, with a demo cinema, Control4 running live, Lutron lighting and blinds working, and multi-room audio throughout.
